Teen sexting's main danger lies in adult overreaction

A FRESH tsunami of panic has arisen over young people sending nude or sexy pictures of themselves on mobile phones or the internet, with fears that children are being charged with making, possessing or distributing child pornography.

On this practice of "sexting", the experts and adults march in lockstep: we need tighter controls, ever more vigilance and reporting to authorities. A picture of a naked body amounts to porn, and if the subject is under-age, that means child porn. It has to be stamped out, to protect the children who create and receive it, and to dry up the porn supply for paedophiles.

But in all of this anxiety, the action to eradicate the problem is more damaging than any consequence that would flow from the pictures without adult intervention.

Young people certainly get themselves into trouble when sending their naked image to a friend, never imagining it might be sent on to any number of people. So kids are well advised to avoid this caper. Adults perform a useful service in discouraging them.

Without adult intervention, other kids at school might smirk or snicker, which is probably fair punishment for doing something reckless. But it's unlikely the image will lead to sexual violence against the child. The history of sexual violence is much older than mobile phones and it hasn't escalated since SMS or the internet.

Even if the picture reaches a paedophile, it is unlikely to affect anyone else. Paedophiles overwhelmingly operate within families and target children who are close and trusting. The idea that these predators seek out the individuals they have seen in an image is more the narrative of films than reality.

The chances are the picture will do no harm to anyone in a secure home, beyond a few spasms of shame that the child will handle as part of growing up. The problems for the child escalate out of all proportion, however, when adults weigh in.

It's then that the child is really traumatised. The picture gets reported to the school, which might report it to the police, who might lay charges. The fear of the courts for a kid and his or her family is psychologically devastating. It's the worst outcome, repairs nothing and does nothing to guarantee safety.

So what about this fearsome threat that the children are guilty of child porn, the production of which might entail long jail terms? This menace of criminality is legal nonsense.

Child porn is against the law, but kids who send one another naughty pictures have no intention of producing such a thing. The idea these rash young people might be put on trial and punished for producing child porn is preposterous. Unfortunately, our society believes all images of naked youngsters are child porn, whereas sexting is clearly a type of self-expression, misguided and vulgar, perhaps, but without malicious intent and thus basically innocent.

It also belongs to an anxious political correctness to assume that the exhibitionist kids are humiliating and debasing themselves in order to win friends. We assume their actions are the product of some undignified hunger rather than spontaneous hedonism, albeit imprudent.

Without adult interference, the risks are tolerable, whereas once adults get involved, the damage is immense. As kids discover their erotic consciousness, we will be embarrassed one way or another by their exhibitionism; and new technologies sometimes augment the twinges. The big challenge for adults is not to increase the threats but to encourage decorum, just as we have done for thousands of years.

Hmm...lack of intention or ignorance of law is not an excuse. I am sure there are many instances where something happens which people dont intend, but are still made responsible for their actions. Education is important, parental guidance and intervention moreso. I believe decorum over "thousand of years" may be a slight over shot, as I am sure you would agree that the expectation and dangers of older style decorum is more damaging then that expected today.

A good dose of national service would do our teenagers well. They are far too fat and far too distracted by lust and far too comforted by the computer age. Dont we ever look to the far north? What do we think China is doing? She is building the worlds largest manpower army. Mao said (early 1960s) he could foot 200 million soldiers. Revelation 9:16 speaks of 200 million soldiers. Do we doubt that one day China will want a NEW SOUTH CHINA Down Under? The Christians dont. We know heaps of prophecies about China Down Under.

GGibson - get some professional help - the magical book of sky fairies you quote from knew nothing about marsupials, thought bats were birds & has the death penalty for cutting your hair, planting more than 1 crop in a field, being disrespectful to your parents but was ok on slavery (& for beating your slaves as long as they didn't die)

What ever happened to simple education. Unfortunately, teens will be teens. And as teens, they will always look for ways to explore their sexuality. Didn't women use to send soldiers photos of themselves during WW2, photos that at the time were considered disgraceful? I don't condoned sexting, but let's face it, you tell a teen NOT to do something, they become more likely to do it. Educate them on the repercussions, and that may change the trend.

@ GGibson -

1. Teens comforted by the computer age? Compared to christians comforted by the delusion that they'll get a pat on the back after death?

2. The christians "know heaps of prophecies about China Down Under"? ...I see... Please give me the paragraph which reads "all of these Chinese people will invade and stuff"

Sorry, but there have been a lot of people with just as much credibility as christians (none) who have declared that the world was ending... yawn.

Besides, the end of the world has nothing to do with China, it's all about zombies (..Jesus?). Everyone knows that.

As things are the modern kids are simply too jelly to be used for defence of the nation. I believe that soon national service will come and many wil get drafted. The film TOMORROW: WHEN THE WAR BEGAN is very much like what prophecies say is coming. Try WHAT WILL BECOME OF AUSTRALIA 12974 by Jack Burrell. Its the classic vision of Australias future. You kids need to get into prayer for Australia.

So, first teens are "becoming more desensitised to violence by video games, making them more aggressive and dangerous", and now they're too "jelly"? Seems the self-righteous christian has a problem with anything anyone does (except for what they themselves do of course).

Tomorrow: when the war began? Those kids kill a fair few people, blow trucks up etc. But they have computers? Your comment argues against itself.

We'll just send you over to China. If they think Australia is full of people like you, they won't be interested in invading.

problem solved! ^.^

@GGibson...Just read your blog. Its interesting how a bridge between religion (which should be based on love, understanding and brotherhood) to fear mongering of epic proportions regarding invasions. P.S. Interesting to read some of your counterparts describing the "army" as being made up of different countries...I guess its all up to a persons interpretation which is very much the reason why religion was the shroud to cover up murderous intent.

@GGibson

Why is it those of Christian faith, such as you, seem to be stuck on prophercies depicting the end of the world through violence. How many religous zealots, christian, catholic and otherwise, have made predictions surrounding the end of the world, depicted from prophercies AND BEEN WRONG. Teens of today are not jelly, many are quite strong in mind and body. If God chose to end the world in war, I'm pretty sure that the big nuclear missles that major countries have will end things pretty quick. May I suggest you put down your bible and find faith in humanity.

GGibson

Man this all seeing all knowing god of yours can't see much
