A LOW ACT: Thieves target Cooinda Retirement Village

17 Nov, 2009 09:03 AM
ANGRY residents and staff of Cooinda Retirement Village are fuming after two residents had their outdoor settings stolen on Saturday night.

Self care unit co-ordinator Robyn Dixon said she was angry and upset after she heard the news of the theft.

“We want people to know what a low act it is to steal from pensioners.

“Both the people who had their furniture stolen are pensioners and they are disabled, they get just enough money in their pension to get by they can’t afford to replace things, it makes me so darn angry.

“One of the residents heard the people stealing their setting and it scared the hell out of them, it’s just so wrong.”

Ross and Ann Prevett relocated to Cooinda from Port Macquarie six months ago and felt safe and happy in their unit until this weekend.

“I had the chairs set up out the front so Ann could sit outside if she wanted to and then they got nicked; the police got them back but one had been smashed up so we can’t use it,” Ross said.

“We haven’t had any problems here and it was six months exactly since we moved on Saturday.

“I’m going to be a lot more vigilant from now on, I’m not even going to leave the ramp outside at night.”

Ross and Ann live simply on the pension and also have their fair share of medical problems.

Ross is vision impaired and has diabetes while Ann has short-term memory loss and is paralysed on her right side.

“I would like to get the people who do these things and introduce them to the people affected,” Robyn said.

“To bring them face to face with people like Ross and Ann and show them that it is so wrong, it might make them think.”

Terry Turner has only been living in Cooinda for one week, after moving from Gosford, and was shocked to find his outdoor chair missing on Sunday morning.

“It was a great welcome to the town,” Terry said.

“I thought I would be safe here, it is a pretty low act to take a lousy old chair.

“It was a big decision for me to move back here and I was really happy to come back and then things like this happen.

“I should be able to leave my stuff outside and now have anyone steal it, I can’t afford to be replacing things… I just spent my whole pension moving up here.”
