AN overflowing Sacred Heart Catholic Church was the ultimate tribute for highly-respected Inverell bus driver Neil Harmon who died doing his job on February 10. More than 700 people attended the funeral service on Friday to honour the 63 year-old driver, who had more than 35 years experience on the road.
Mr Harmon’s son Mark said his family was overwhelmed by the support they have received since the tragic and senseless loss.
“There are 685 signatures in his condolence book and there were others that didn’t get to sign it and this makes us so proud to see Dad had so many friends,’’ Mark said.
“He was a dearly loved family man and great friend to so many locally and interstate.
“Mum was still receiving flowers on Saturday,’’ he said
Mr Harmon’s service opened with his favourite Slim Dusty music followed by remembrances and tributes from his three children Mark, Bec and Amanda.
Close friend Rosemary Breen spoke on behalf of his wife Helen and cousin Craig Harmon delivered Mark’s tribute to his father and best mate. Craig’s brother Paul also addressed the large congregation on behalf of the Harmon family.
A power point presentation then reflected Neil’s life.
Gerry Taveira delivered ‘All Is Well’ written by Henry Scott-Holland.
Members of the NSW Fire Brigade and staff from the Bus NSW, CountryLink officials and staff from Tamworth, Symes Bus Service, Inverell Bus Service, Edwards Coaches and Bilsborough Bus Service from Bingara were present at the service.
“It was very special to us to see all the representatives at Dad’s funeral to pay tribute a great man,’’ Mark said.
“To have the members of the Inverell Pipe Band, which I am a member of was great as Dad came with us to Scotland in 2008 and was one of our great supporters.”
The bagpipers Bruce Chisholm, Graham Chisholm, Rodney Purvis, Patrick Harmon and David and Christine McIntyre played the recessional hymn Amazing Grace.
Mr Harmon was killed after a collision involving the CountryLink coach he was driving from Moree to Grafton and a B Double truck on the Gibraltar Range east of Glen Innes.
Investigations are continuing into the accident.
