Flood appeal starts on Facebook

10 Feb, 2012 07:16 AM
A FLOOD relief appeal for Moree has started in Inverell and it all began on Facebook.

Alanna Roberts and Sherree Harding from the Wade Street Mini-Mart on Ross Hill are the instigators of the appeal.

“On Facebook I have a group called ‘Inverell Trash And Treasure’ and my nephew’s partner had a lounge to give away and a lady from Moree said ‘why don’t you give it to the flood victims of Moree, and it started from there,” Alanna said.

“I rang Inverell Freighters and Kerri Brown has offered the services of one of his trucks to take the items down, also rang Gary at Liberty at Glen Innes Road and that’s another drop off point.

“I’ve had people bringing item into me like toys, new clothing, non perishable food, furniture, second hand clothing, toiletries, all that sort of thing,” Alanna said.

Anyone considering donating to the appeal should consider that furniture needs to be in good condition otherwise it will only be thrown out when it arrives down there Alanna said.

“Toiletries can’t be opened, things like talcum powder, soap and stuff like that has to be new,” she said.

“Any sort of clothing, clean clothing, linen, towels, we can’t accept pillows or mattresses or anything like that for health reasons, but if somebody wants to buy them new and they’re still in their packaging then that’s fine,” Alanna said.

The two drop-off points for the appeal are at the Wade Street Mini-Mart and the Liberty Service station on Glen Innes road.

Arrangements can be made to have furniture collected locally and Alanna said it will all be sent to Moree in about two weeks time, depending on road conditions.

“The Gwydir Shire Council at Bingara rang me yesterday and they’ve had people who have heard about it on Trash And Treasure and they are taking their items to the Gwydir Shire Council and we will pick that up on the way through,” Alanna said.

Northern Tablelands MP Richard Torbay said he had been contacted by many individuals and groups in the community wanting to assist with the flood relief effort.

“This initiative is exactly what is needed and I am sure will secure a strong response across the community,” Mr Torbay said.

“Congratulations to all involved. It is what people do in the country; help each other out in times of trouble.

“Our hearts go out to those who have lost so much through this severe flooding and who are experiencing such trauma in trying to get their lives back together. I am sure there will be a strong response to this appeal,” Mr Torbay said.

Goods from the appeal will be delivered to St Vincent de Paul in Moree and Alanna said they need volunteers for packing and loading as well as people with cars and trailers for local pickups.

Anyone needing to organise the collection of goods should ring 6722 3760.
