Gilgai firefighters set to get new truck

08 Jun, 2007 12:09 PM
A MUCH younger model will soon replace the 22-year-old tanker that has seen years of action with the Gilgai Rural Fire Service (RFS).

The replacement vehicle is a category one four-wheel-drive tanker capable of attending both bush and village fires.

Manager of the Northern Tablelands RFS team Chris Wallbridge said the replacement tanker was a five-year-old truck sourced from Sydney.

"It's the biggest four-wheel-drive tanker we make," Mr Wallbridge said.

He said the vehicle was currently being outfitted and would be in operation in Gilgai by the end of June.

Gilgai RFS has 24 active firefighters, but Mr Wallbridge said more were always welcome to join.

The brigade currently uses a 1985 Isuzu tanker, which is the oldest vehicle in the Northern Tablelands fleet.

Mr Wallbridge said Nullamanna and Wallangra RFS brigades have also recently taken possession of new tankers.
