AT least eight Inverell residents are putting off their holiday to India after more than 170 people were killed in terrorist attacks in the heart of Mumbai last week.
Known as India’s commercial capital, terrorists used machine gun and grenade assaults on two five-star hotels, including the Taj Mahal Palace, the city’s main railway station, a popular restaurant and a Jewish cultural centre.
Harvey World Travel manager Jamie Cracknell said people going to India needed to research what was happening before they decided to travel.
“The bottom line is that there has been a lot of killings and unrest in India in the past month,” Mr Cracknell said.
“My concern is that the Mumbai attack is not just a one off and it is very important for people to know what is happening over there before they take off for a holiday.
“There is a lot of unrest in the world at the moment, and the main response people have had to the latest attack is that they will just wait and see what happens before they decide to take their holiday.”
Mr Cracknell said he knew of about 20 Inverell residents that were planning to go to India between now and January.
“The main thing is that you don’t know what the situation is like until you get there and whether you will be safe or not,” he said.
“I haven’t spoken to all of the people yet, but I know of at least eight who are putting their plans on hold.”
A tour was proposed for India and Bhutan next year through Harvey World Travel, but Mr Cracknell has decided to cancel it.
“I am just not comfortable about going there at the moment,” he said.
