Mosaic comes together along cultural precinct

Mosaic comes together along cultural precinct

14 Feb, 2012 07:29 AM
THE showcase area of Evans Street, between Otho Street and Campbell Street along with the town hall, is the area referred to as Inverell’s cultural precinct.

A large part of the improvements currently taking place will be a mosaic that will run the full length of the footpath (about 80 metres) on the southern side of Evans Street.

Janet and Bert Makepeace created the mosaic and put it together in 90 centimetre by 1.2 metre panels with the help of many volunteers using high-fired outdoor tiles.

Volunteers are currently in the process of laying it out, section by section, in the footpath.

The artwork is based around the Macintyre River and the flora and fauna that exist there and Bert said the engineering that preceded the laying of the mosaic is almost as impressive.

“Nobody knows this, but when the council laid that footpath they didn’t have any idea what we were doing, all they had was a plan,” Bert said.

“From that plan they laid the concrete with a footing recess down the middle of it exactly three centimetres deep. Our work has fitted so neatly into that; there’s been no hassles. I’m thrilled with the way it’s going together.

“We’ve come from the gallery and have another nine point seven metres to lay yet before we reach the corner at the Town Hall, then we’ll take a break until after the 50th Anniversary Exhibition,” Bert said.

Stage three of the project (from the art gallery the Inverell Club) is due to recommence in early March.
