OLD ‘Postie’ bikes will be getting a flogging on a stranger than normal run – not to deliver mail, but to help raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Inverell Honda dealer, Vince Strang couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get involved, and has thrown his helmet in the ring.
Vince has agreed to join a group of adventurers from around Australia raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The dedicated band of motorcycle riders dispense with their ‘normal’ steeds once a year and embark on a challenge of daring and endurance by riding resurrected ex-Australia Post Honda CT110 model bikes to a remote destination.
Each rider has to make a $500 donation to the RFDS as an entry fee before being allowed to join the ‘circus’, which has become known as the Hardcore Posties.
This year the ride is starting at Tibooburra and travelling to Lake Eyre via Cameron Corner, Arkaroola, Umbertana, Blinman, Leigh Creek, William Creek and remote tracks and byways in between.
“A friend fell off his bike on the Canning Stock Route during a ride, and he is one of the organisers of this event, which is in its third year.
“I’m going because I’m with friends as well,” he said. “Last year the ride was in Tasmania, but I’d prefer a desert ride and have always wanted to see Lake Eyre.”
Riders need to provide for themselves during the challenge, so a fair amount of innovation and thought usually goes into the setting up of the ‘postie’.
Vince, usually up for a challenge, has decided to use the older original CT90.
“Mainly because it was the only thing lying around,” Vince said.
“It will be a good test of the Honda reputation for reliability, as my CT90 is 30 years old.”
Vince, and friend Greg Stevens, spent some time modifying the Honda.
“We also fitted three extra rack systems to carry extra fuel, swag, food, water, clothing, tools and spare tubes to cover the event.”
The ‘Hardcore Postie’ ride will leave Tibooburra at 5am on Friday, July 10, and is expected to arrive at Lake Eyre on July 14.
“I’m getting a lift out on July 8, as I’ve discovered the Postie bike only travels at about 60kms per hour, and it would take me a long time to get to the start.”
Anyone who would like to help support Vince in his efforts to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and cover any other expenses during his ride can call him on 67210610 or call in to his Inverell store before Wednesday July 8.
