Sisters join forces for charity

11 Mar, 2008 10:04 AM
INVERELL’S Deanna and Sara Poole are losing their locks to make a difference.

The sisters have joined together to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave to support people suffering from cancer.

Deanna said she was going to shave her hair off after her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago.

“I promised her I would have my head shaved when she lost her hair during chemotherapy, but she went so quickly I never had the chance to do it,” she said.

Now two years on, Deanna and Sara have decided to join forces and do it together.

They will have their hair taken off at 9am on March 14 at Babs Lorraine Hair Salon.

“We wanted to do it for a reason and we thought Shave for a Cure would be the best way,” Deanna said.

When the pair decided to do the fundraiser, they aimed to raise $1000 between them and have almost reached their initial goal.

Now, they are hoping to earn $1000 each to help patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Deanna said they were overwhelmed by the support of local businesses.

“We have already had a lot of donations and prizes to give away in the raffle we are running at the moment,” she said.

“The support has been absolutely fantastic.”

The girls will also be donating their lost hair to Locks of Love, who will transform their hair into wigs for children with leukaemia.

“We have always had long hair so we are both kind of excited and nervous about having very short hair,” Deanna said.

“It is a bit of a weird thought knowing someone else is going to be wearing our hair but it is so worthwhile.

“The children it will go to, definitely need it more than us.”

About 100,000 people across the country are expected to shave or colour their hair to raise funds for people living with cancer.

The Shave for a Cure funds go to patients and their families so they can concentrate on what is most important – getting well.

Between now and March 14, Deanna and Sara will be selling raffle tickets in the CBD.

You can support them by buying a ticket or sponsoring them at Inverell Video Ezy.
