Students experience the corridors of power

23 Jun, 2009 12:20 PM
Two Inverell High School students spent last week in Parliament House in Canberra undertaking work experience as part of their Year 10 development programs.

Tori McGregor worked with the Independent Member for New England, Tony Windsor whilst Clare Angel-Auld worked with Senator John Williams.

Mr Windsor said he was delighted to have Miss McGregor working with him and experiencing the week in Canberra.

“Tori has fitted in to Parliament office and has undertaken research of legislation before the House, assisted with media release preparation and worked alongside my Adviser, Graham Nuttall,” the MP said.

“Tori has displayed a real keenness for knowledge, not only about the issues in the Parliament, but also the process, which is very refreshing for one so young.

“She has approached each day with a real enthusiasm and is a credit to Inverell High School and her family,” Mr Windsor said.

Mr Windsor said Tori and Clare took every opportunity to learn about the Parliament.

“The young ladies were certainly not backward in coming forward.

“Tori and Clare got to go behind the scenes into parts of the Parliament that I haven’t even been to.

“They also met many Ministers, Members and Senators from all sides of politics including the Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the Treasurer Wayne Swan, Australian Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown and Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey as well as seeing how people lobby MPs and Senators on their issues.

“I hope they enjoyed their experience – they have certainly made the most of it and I can’t speak highly enough of the way they took up the opportunity and the challenge of a week in the Parliament,” Mr Windsor said.
