TWO P-platers were caught street racing through the streets of Inverell on Thursday afternoon.
Police said they observed the two vehicles, a silver Subaru sedan and a blue Holden Commodore sedan, speeding along Campbell Street at 2.15pm yesterday afternoon.
The vehicles were observed driving between 90km/h and 100km/h in the 60km/h zone.
After continuing to speed through town both vehicles were soon located by Highway Patrol officers. The drivers were spoken too and quickly admitted to their speed and dangerous manner of driving. Police said both were Provisional P1 licence holders with only a year of driving experience.
Due to their remorse and clean driving record, they were issued with infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit.
They could have faced severe penalties under the new Street Racing legislation.
The drivers will have their licences suspended for three months by the RTA for exceeding the speed limit on a provisional P1 licence. Highway patrol officers said this type of behaviour by our young drivers is disappointing to see.
"At a time where the serious injury and fatal collision rate is increasing, the message is not getting across. It's simple, slow down, drive sensibly because in a split second things could change and go horribly wrong," one officer said.
Police said they will maintain their presence on the roads during this school holiday period in an effort to keep the roads fatality free.
