Locals impress at Hell of the West triathlon

05 Feb, 2010 10:04 AM
INVERELL triathletes turned in impressive performance at the Hell of the West in Goondiwindi.

The renowned event lived up to its reputation with records tumbling on the day.

Luke McKenzie won the title after breaking the course record by six minutes with a time of 3hrs:35mins:23secs.

Mick Hoynes (pictured left) finished second in the 45-49 years division in what he described as a strong effort.

“That’s probably the best I’ve pulled up after that race as last year I could hardly walk the next day,’’ Hoynes said.

It was his eight time in the event which attracted 600 competitors this year.

Hoynes was also full of praise for fellow club members Brett Newton and Peter Lane.

Newton finished seventh in his age group (35-39 years) in a time of 4:04.

“He went really well and is only going to get better this season,’’ Hoynes said.

Lane also performed well in the same division as Hoynes to complete the course in 5:30.
