Triple treat for Aussies

08 Feb, 2012 11:57 AM
The Print Anything Twenty 20 Big Bash competition finals were held at Brooks Oval on Sunday and the Retravision Aussies have taken out the title for the third year running, claiming victory against Davidson Cameron & Co.

In a high scoring affair Davidson and Cameron batted first and got off to a fantastic start, with the score at 1/105 after just six overs.

Ross Chilcott (64 from 26 balls) and Jon Krauss (65 off 31) hit 11 sixes between them to get their side off to a great start, but the Aussies dug in to eventually restrict them to 9/193 from their 20 overs.

Aussies skipper Damien Smith was the best with the ball, claiming 4/33 from his four overs.

Despite the large total, the Aussies reached the target after only 17 overs for the loss of five wickets, with opener Jay Sinclair smashing a half-century from 24 balls and he had good support from Jon orchard, who made 43. Damien Smith said he was happy to have won the competition for the third year in a row and praised his side for a great team effort.

“It’s always good to win,” he said.

“We’ve had about four or five players who we’ve had playing each year and that’s created a great partnership, because we’ve been able to stick with the same group and everyone knows their job.”

“It was a great team effort with Jay making a half-century and Jon Orchard batted and bowled really well.”

“We actually went into the game in second place.”

“They’d beaten us a couple of times and they’re a really strong side, so it was definitely good to get the win.”

“It’s always been a strong competition and it’s fairly even, which is good for the game.”

Imperial and Tim Torgau Tiling/Dave Cook Electrical also met on the day in the third place playoff.

Imperial batted first and made 6 for 152.

The best with the bat was Jessie Williams with 48no off 29 balls, while the best bowler for Tim Torgau Tiling/Dave Cook Electrical was Shawn Mepham with 2/12.

Tim Torgau Tiling/Dave Cook Electrical chased down the total off 11 overs, reaching 3/161.

Shawn Mepham continued his performance with the bat, scoring 71no off 25 balls including nine sixes, while Dave Mudaliar was the best bowler for Imperial with 1/30.

Despite a warm weekend there was no such luck in the regular competition, with yet another round affected by rain.

A number of matches were washed out without a ball bowled and those who did play seemed to struggle with the conditions, with two very low-scoring affairs.

Imperial scored a big win against the Rats after they bowled out their opponents for just 61.

Rodney Blair (5/39) and Clint Connors (3/19) did the damage with the ball.

It was a relatively easy chase for Imperial, who accounted for the total for the loss of three wickets.

Rodney Blair completed a good all-round performance, making 35 with the bat, while Lachlan Binnie claimed all three wickets for the Rats.

It was another low-scoring affair in the only other match to be played, between Staggy Creek and Warialda.

Staggy bowled out Warialda for only 86, with Gary Hadland (five wickets) and Simon Donnelly (four wickets) combining with the ball.

Staggy reached the total three wickets down, with Paul Dailey top scoring with 44 not out.

Teams will no doubt be hoping for better luck with the weather in the coming weeks in the lead up to the finals.
