In near perfect weather conditions on Saturday, cyclists took to the Gwydir Highway between Grafton and Inverell for the annual Sportif event, and again the superb organisation saw the event run smoothly.
One hundred and twenty two riders completed the 228 kilometres endurance course from Grafton, the first riders arriving just over 8 hours after leaving Grafton, and the last crossing the line after 7pm, a 13 hour marathon.
Fifty-four riders finished the 110 kilometre Mount Mitchell leg, and all sixteen starters reached Inverell from Glen Innes (70k).
But the highlight of the whole event was to come at the presentation dinner when Inverell cyclist Alex Murray announced that on the 16th of March he would ride from Inverell to Brisbane, a distance of 460 kilometres, in 24 hours for leukaemia research and to support a young Inverell child.
As organisers then conducted the traditional 20 $100 cash draws for all people at the dinner, each of the winners walked over to Alex and handed over their winnings to him to kick start his fundraising.
