INVERELL born cyclist Heinrich Haussler is continuing to make his mark on the international cycling circuit, and has been chosen for the Cervlo Test Team for the world’s biggest cycling event, the Tour de France. Haussler has already had a stellar year, taking out the sprinters jersey in the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve against the world’s top sprinter Mark Cavendish, and came in second to Cavendish in the Milan to Sanremo Classic.
The Tour, known as the world’s toughest sporting event begins tomorrow in Monaco and will cover 21 stages that include 10 flat stages, eight mountain stages, two individual time trials and one team time trial.
The Tour will make its way over 3500 km through France, Spain and Switzerland before the final in Paris on the Champs Elyses on Sunday July 26. Haussler’s father, Heinrich Snr said his son has a very good chance of taking out one of the stages of the Tour.
“When he came first in the stage of the Tour of Spain I was so emotional and I think he has a really good chance of taking out a stage in the Tour de France, and I’ll be even worse if he wins one of those stages.
“It is the toughest sporting event in the world and he has been riding very very well.”
The Cervlo Test Team has a great mix of riders with various skills as sprinters, climbers and GC riders and from that Haussler was chosen in the final roster of nine athletes and three reserves.
Carlos Sastre (Spain), as the defending Tour champion and sprint ace Thor Hushovd (Norway) will serve as the team captains.
