Pony Club sets standard

06 Nov, 2009 10:00 AM
THE annual Pony Club Ribbon days kicked off at Stonehenge Sports Ground with Glen Innes playing host to the Northern Zone 13 pony clubs last Saturday October 31.

In excess of 120 riders competed in a number of events with riders coming from as far as Tenterfield in the north, Armidale in the south and even one family travelling from Grafton. Inverell had 47 riders attend the meet.

The youngest rider was just four years-old through to seasoned campaigners at 17 years of age.

A great effort was made by the rider’s families to get their children there to represent Inverell Pony Club and the weather was near perfect for the day. Both horses and riders enjoyed the soft going with the handy drop of rain which fell the day before.

The Inverell club tallied over 1600 points for the day more than 600 over their nearest rivals Glen Innes. Inverell riders secured either or both high point score and reserve high point scores in every age group. No mean feat given the level of competition.

The hard work and dedication was evident of the Inverell riders given their consistency throughout the day. Another more important feature was Inverell’s sportsmanship and enthusiasm exhibited by all the riders and their families throughout the day.

Kirsty McCormack the club captain admirably lead the riders out for a mounted presentation in uniform and the following riders were awarded high point score champions for their age groups: Sam McLachlan, Mackenzie Berkley, Shakira Wilson, Tyler Berkley, Chelsea Hobday, Justin Oakenfull, Hannah Worsely, Hannah Monckton, Kirsty McCormack and Cassie Adams.

The following riders were awarded reserve point score champions for their age groups Tyson Hodges, Claudia Neate, Elayna Browett, Tom O’Brien, Olivia Adams, Kylie Monckton and Jessica O’Brien.

It is sure to be a great season of competition given the flying start the Inverell club has kicked off with.

Pony club competitors have a full calendar over the next few weeks with Kingstown and Bundarra Ribbon days at Bundarra on November 7 and 8 at Bundarra.

Inverell will also be holding a meet on November 14 and 15 which includes a ribbon day, blue jeans day and off horse competitions on the Saturday night at the Inverell Showground.

Emmaville and Tenterfield ribbon days will be at Tenterfield on November 28 and 29 and State show riding will then be at Bingara on December 5 and 6.

After the Christmas break the Jamboree training will commence on the January 2, 2010.
