Since making the difficult decision to choose golf over his other childhood passion cricket, Brett Drewitt’s career has gone from strength to strength.
Drewitt grew up in Inverell and was a talented cricketer in his teens and played at representative, but he eventually decided to focus on golf at the age of 16.
Now based with the Long Reef club in Sydney, Drewitt continues to impress in the sport and recently won the NSW Amateur Championship at the Elanora Country Club.
“It was a good quality field and it’s my home amateur, so I was absolutely stoked to get a win under my belt,” he said.
Although Drewitt credit’s his move to Sydney as being extremely beneficial for his career, he still always loves to come back to Inverell.
“It’s been good down here, but I get to divide my time between Sydney and Inverell.”
“When I’m home I do a lot of working out in the gym and just mix things up.
“I also get to see my friends and family, so it’s always good to be able to come back and relax.”
While he misses playing cricket, Drewitt said he felt he had made the right decision to stick with golf.
“In golf you make decisions and control your own destiny.
“I miss cricket and when I get the chance I’ll still come back and play the odd game for Campbell and Freebairn, but sometimes you’ve got to do what’s right.
“It was a hard decision but I think it was the right one.”
Drewitt recently competed in the Riverside Cup in Victoria and is now heading to Hobart for the Tasmanian Open, where he finished second last year.
In the not too distant future he will also have the opportunity to head overseas and is likely to play in tournaments in Turkey, the UK and the US later this year.
Like in any sport Drewitt hopes to eventually turn professional and if he keeps up his strong performances, it could happen sooner rather than later.
“I’m striving for the end of the year, but if I’m not ready, there’s no point,” he said.
“It depends on results and whether I feel up to it, but another year of amateurs might help.
“I will just have to wait and see where it takes me.”
