JONO Holder is a man on a mission. At only 19 years of age, the former New England Open winner and three-handicapper is in the process of attempting to become a professional golfer.
For the next twelve months the affable youngster will groom his game under the tutelage of father Rick in a bid to be ready for qualifying school. It is a path laced with danger however the Ernie Els type teenager has the game and the temperament to succeed according to many.
Qualifying school only accepts the top five and even then there are further hurdles a budding professional must jump before there is money in the bank. Still, with Tiger Woods as an inspiration and a Reteif Goosen styled golf swing the chance to earn riches on the litany of golf tours around the world is a real possibility for Jono.
“I play every day and practice as well so I am giving it my best,” said Jono.
And his best is very good and better than most.
Jono hits the ball out of side and his lady three-wood is among his preferred clubs however he concedes that to make it he must improve his short game, particularly his putting.
“I think it is something I need to work on but it is something all players need to work on,” he said.
Aside from an abundance of ability, Holder also has other plans in place to ensure that he has qualifications to fall back on or utilise should he need to.
“I was accepted into Griffith University and Newcastle University for engineering so it is good to know I have that there.
“But the goal is to become a professional.”
And with Tiger Woods now sport’s first billionaire he has certainly chosen the right sport to make a mark in.
With that attitude, a swing like the Elk and the eye of the Tiger who could argue? Yet even Jono Holder knows that for every player that makes it big on the US PGA Tour there are thousands sleeping in the cars at golf course car parks in one-horse towns trying to grind out a living.
One gets the feeling though that Jono won’t be doing that.
