IT was a big day for Inverell horse trainer John Berger at the Namoi Cotton-Landmark Mungindi Cup on Saturday.
Not only did the two horses he trained come home successful, Berger was announced the leading trainer of the day.
His wife, Val said it had been a while since he had been awarded the title.
"He was very happy and it was a good day for him," Mrs Berger said.
"To have a win, a second and then the award was fantastic."
Berger's Miss NancyAnn came first in the Christopher Skyes Memorial Maiden Plate 1000m 3/4 lengths in front of Tallariz and Little Zippy was third.
His other horse, Full Shadow placed second in the B & W Rural Rating 67 Handicap 1000m four and a half lengths behind Disaster Den.
Both horses were ridden by Armidale jockey Geoffrey Snowden.
Berger's grandson Luke's horse Draw The Line was supposed to race in the Mungindi Cup 1400m but was scratched at the last minute because of a minor injury.
Meanwhile, Inverell jockey Sarah Gaffaney also had success at Mungindi riding Cliff Beaton-trained Sven.
Sven came second in the Mungindi Cup one and a quarter lengths behind Your Latest Trick.
Inverell trainer Robert Crowther had his horse Newberry Wonder place fourth in the Cup.
Crowther also had King Nick, Absent Blaze and Sarakima race on the day, but they didn't place.
