THE Inverell Harness Racing Club will showcase a six-race program on Saturday night as part of its opening meeting for the season and for president Lance De Fraine he could not be any happier.
“After I had a look at the fields I thought it’s going to be a “ripper of a meeting,” De Fraine said.
Armidale trainer Ron Whitton is bringing 12 starters which includes Moneycounter who has had three starts for three wins since coming from New Zealand.
Moneycounter will start from barrier six in the Royal Hotel Motel and Inverell RSM Club Pace with Peter Bullock in the spider. Bullock drove the Armbro Operative – Happyasasandgirl in all of the geldings wins at Tamworth and Newcastle.
“Our first class race for the night is named in appreciation of Ted and Molly Sweaney as they are two of the pioneers in the spot from Inverell and have put a lot into the industry over the years. They still love to come and watch the races”, De Fraine said.
With free entry onto the paceway on Saturday night, the hardworking Inverell Harness Racing Club has elected to have an earlier stating time of 7pm with the first race, the Liberty Junction Service Station Pace being over the shorter distance of 1639 metres with the other five races conducted over the 2000 metres.
“Best Employment is sponsoring the gate and we just think that in this economic climate it is a good chance for families to head down to the meeting and enjoy themselves with the free entry, so we are looking to have a lot of locals at the meeting,” De Fraine said
The final two heats of the International Animal Health Products sponsored North West Inter Club Challenge will also feature on the program with the final to be conducted at Tamworth on November 20.
Gunnedah trainer and reinswoman Sally Torrens will give Strong Intent a start in the fourth heat of the series, the Wade Street Meats Pace after the mare won the opening heat of the series at Narrabri two weeks ago.
Only one pacer has made a clean sweep of the series since its inception back in 2005 and that was Rockanroll Romeo who won a heat at Narrabri and Inverell and then to the final at Tamworth.
Torrens comes into tomorrow night’s meeting after driving a double at the Narrabri harness meeting and will have two runners at the Inverell meeting with Strong Destiny to have a start in the third heat of the series, the Blue Gem Contractors Pace.
“You couldn’t ask for a better quality harness meeting,” De Fraine said.
“It is good to see Toby Grant bringing two runners up from Manilla, Woodywoodchuck and Our Boy Dean. Toby is 76 years of age and is the oldest registered competing reinsman in NSW. He has been coming to Inverell since he was a young boy and I reckon he and Ted Sweaney will have some yarns to spin throughout the night.’’
The first race is at 7pm.
