WORK commitments have forced Inverell Hawks first grade co-coach Robert Monckton to quit before the season has started.

The 38 year-old concreter,who has been with the club for three years, will move to Victoria in July for a stint of work.

He coached the team last year and was recently appointed co-coach along with Tim McIntyre.

Monckton said his decision was in the best interests of the club.

"It would be pointless for me to continue as coach if I am going to be out of town for a long time - work is very important and I have to take the opportunity," Monckton said.

"The job is worth a lot of money to me."

Monckton made the decision last week and notified club officials so they can move with the next optionimmediately.

"I'm sure Tim will do a great job, it's a tough position and I know that from last year," Monckton said.

Monckton denied he had a falling out with Hawks' officials over his decision.

"There was a bit of talk but my decision is purely employment based and that's all there is to it," Monckton said.

Reserve grade will be coached by David Walls while Gary Longhurst leads the U-18s.

This year's Group 19 competition comprises eight teams with the return of Armidale to first grade.

Inverell, Glen Innes, Warialda, Guyra, Tingha, YCW and Narwan make up the competition.
