Overseas talent join Highlanders

04 Mar, 2011 09:10 AM
THREE new players from overseas have signed to play for the Highlanders ahead of the 2011 first grade season, which will be sure to boost their campaign to take the top prize this year.

Luther Robinson and Jade Britain from New Zealand, and Ben Murray from England arrived in Australia this week.

All three were noticed on an international website, which is used to show players who are looking to travel.

They are now working in the Inverell community as well as playing rugby.

After losing ten players from first grade last season, coach Stuart Griffin says this was just what the team needed.

"There is a lot of local talent around here, but there were some key positions we weren't able to fill, so we had to find some players."

Ben Murray will play halfback, Luther Robinson will play breakaway, and Jade Britain will line up in the front row.

So far Griffin says the boys have been impressive.

"In their training performances so far they have been very strong and standing out. We're looking forward to seeing how they'll play this weekend."

The recruits have played representative football in their own countries, and Griffin says they have aspirations for staying in Inverell for a few years and getting into representative football here.

The coach is looking forward to rebuilding the new team, and local players have stepped up to fill the other remaining positions.

Griffin, who is coaching the team along with co-coach Chris Perceval, is confident the team will perform well this season.

"It is a new team for us, but we're looking to play the game a lot harder than we have in previous years, and Chris brings a lot of experience to the club and to the team.

“We're definitely contenders."

There will be trial matches held tomorrow at Rugby Park commencing at 3.30pm. Inverell first and reserve grade will be combining to play games against Grafton and the Central North Representative team.

The Under 19's Inverell and Grafton teams will be combining to play the Under 20's Central North team.

Entry will be a gold coin donation, which will go to Richard Torbay's Flood Appeal, helping victims in the Bonshaw, Texas and Yetman area, especially helping farmers who have lost a lot in the recent flooding.

After the games, players will be heading to the Australian Hotel, where local band Stars of Thursday will be playing in the beer garden.

Grow and support your own players why don't you? Everyone dislikes the Tamworth sides but isn't it more satisfying when you beat them with home grown talent - and you're not that short on it either by the way. Buying your way into the premiership race isn't that flattering lads.
