JOSIE Gibson has been swimming since 2003. The 14 year-old wasn’t always a natural in the water but it didn’t take long for her to start to make a ripple.
Currently, she is the age champion at Holy Trinity winning nearly everything on that day at the carnival in a landmark performance. Gibson (pictured above) was particularly devastating in the butterfly and freestyle and made a splash many won’t forget for a long time.
She has represented her school and town at Combined Catholic Colleges and Country Championships and more recently, has been pitted against the boys!
Yes, that’s right.
In an era where the disparity between the male and female performance has never been more evident, Josie is rewriting the norm for all the doomsayers by sticking it to the blokes with some scintillating performances.
More specifically, her favourite events include butterfly and freestyle over 50 and 100m and her power, acceleration and strength are there for all to see in these two power disciplines.
“It’s not a career option, but a valued pastime I hope to continue into adult life,” she said.
“I have too many other interests. Hobbies like music, (singing, piano and flute) and netball.”
Though she credits her success to her two biggest swimming inspirations - Libby Trickett and Michael Phelps, two extraordinary athletes.
Who knows, we may well say the same thing about Josie Gibson too.
