The film Closer to the Edge is a British docum-entary about the world-famous Isle of Man TT motorcycle race and will be screened from 8pm.
It is one on a list of many events organised to raise funds for the ride and awareness of Down Syndrome NSW.
This year Team Inverell has a group of 14 members who will travel to Comeroo Camel Station, north of Bourke, which will be known as the “Back of Bourke ride.”
Team coordinator Col Meacham said so far they have raised $1420 from their charity ride last month, $750 from their garage sale, have had $500 donations from Senator John Williams and the Inverell Motorcycle Restorers Club and a number of smaller individual donations, adding up to about $3340 overall.
There is another raffle going on now until March 23, where the winner will be drawn at dinner at the Oxford Hotel.
The team have a fundraising goal of $5000, which Meacham said it looks like they will achieve, although their main aim this year is to raise awareness of the cause.
“We’ve decided to focus more on the awareness side this year, particularly given the economic climate where you have busin-esses being bombarded every day,” Meacham said.
“What’s been miss-ing are the individual donators. If we had 100 people donate $10 it would be great.”
It seems the aware-ness angle is working, with a group of people who participated in the charity ride now registering for the Scra-pheap Adventure Ride.
“We’ve had two or three from that who are definitely coming and a couple of others are thinking very seriously about it,” Meacham said.
“I think that shows the message is getting across,” he added.
Meacham said they’re looking at three days each way for the trip, with a range of bikes including an 1100cc and a 70cc, only capable of doing about 60 kilometres an hour.
Interestingly this year is probably the closest the destination will be for a long time and they’re still looking at an 1800km round trip.
Tickets for the movie night are on sale at Vince Strang Motorcycles and the Oxford Hotel. All proceeds raised will go to Down Syndrome NSW.
