The event is being conducted at the Zaoh B&G Marine Centre Gymnasium in Miyagi, Japan on the weekend September 21-22.

King, one of only 10 Renshi 6th Dans in the world, has the added responsibility of being the team coach for the trip, which is being organised by Shihan Nigel McReaddie, 7th degree black belt from Kenyukan dojo in Brisbane who will be the team manager.

“There’s over 300 competitors,” King said.

“We’ve got a team of 30 all up with supporters, family and friends. I’m totally excited about it, but it’s been a really big process. Just fitting in the extra training and the guidance with the students has taken up a lot of time.

“But in saying that they are prepared and they are ready, so hopefully we get some placings in the competition.”

King said he didn’t want to sound too confident about his student’s medal chances.

“I know with any world championship it can be over within a second, so I’m just sure they will give it their best shot,” he said.

“The competitors have had a selection process of three competitions, which was an International event, the Oceania Cup. Based on the placings they’ve received they’ve been selected to participate in the World Cup.”

As team manager McReaddie said he thinks the Australians will be recognised as a competitive force.

“They’re quite well known, particularly the seniors…There’s quite a lot of depth.” McReaddie said.

“Nick and the Inverell community have made a huge contribution. Out of the 30 people going we’ve got 18 male and female competitors.

“We’ve spoken to Japan…Hanshi Hisataka and Shihan Masamitsu Kudaka, the head family members of our style in the World Koshiki Karatedo Federation and they’re very excited about meeting the 30 people from Australia.”
