Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall this week announced $200,000 in funding from the NSW Government to assist the Inverell Shire Council seal the remaining three kilometres of dirt road.
Mr Marshall said the announcement follows the allocation of $5.4 million in grants by the NSW Government for more than 70 projects across the state under the 2013-2014 Better Boating Program (BBP).
“The Better Boating Program is about funding local projects that make a big difference in improving boating facilities for communities across NSW, and this program supports local councils, boating clubs and other agencies upgrade and improve facilities at popular local boat ramps,” Mr Marshall said.
“Inverell Shire Council will contribute $200,000 to the works which will result in a fully sealed two way access road making Copeton Dam more accessible, safer and able to cater for increased demand,” he said.
The state MP said the funding is a welcome boost for Inverell and good news for the many boating enthusiasts and fisherman and families who are regular visitors to the dam.
“Copeton Dam is a very popular destination for locals and visitors alike over the holiday period so it will be a great bonus to the area to have that road sealed and therefore safer to use.
“I look forward to seeing the project underway in the new year,” Mr Marshall said.
Inverell Shire Mayor, Cr Paul Harmon said the provision of the funding provided the council with a great opportunity and was a factor in their strategic planing
“This road work had not been factored into this year’s budget but now this money has been made available and as we are in a financially strong position, we will be able to make the most of the grant,” Cr Harmon said.
“This will be an excellent outcome for day use of the dam.
“A lot of people head out to the dam after work in the summer and get in a few hours of skiing.
“This upgrade will improve the safety of the trip and make it a more accessible.
“We certainly appreciate the funding coming our way and more than happy to match it dollar for dollar,” he said.
