Emergency services were called to Rifle Range Road just before 7.30am after a collision between a car and pushbike.
The bike rider, a 53-year-old man, was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.
The man, an off-duty police officer, remains in a critical condition.
The driver was not injured and is helping police with inquiries.
An investigation into the incident is underway and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
