Identity of driver killed may not be known for weeks 

INVERELL detectives have said the identity of a driver killed in a head-on collission on Monday night about 15 km from Delungra may not be known for about three weeks after they have had to resort to DNA proceedures to gain confirmation.

The driver was killed on the Gwydir Highway about 9pm when an eastward bound sedan collided head-on with a semi trailer travelling in a westward direction. 

The sedan was engulfed in flames on impact and its driver killed instantly. Due to the fire, police are yet to determine the identity of the deceased.

NSW Fire and Rescue attended the scene to assist, together with the Rural Fire Service, VRA, SES, and NSW Paramedics. The driver of the truck was not injured and was taken to Inverell Hospital for mandatory tests and treated for shock.

The crash is being investigated by local detectives who have said the acident will be subject to coronial investigation.
