It was a game the Saints wanted to win. The Roos were equal second on the ladder with the Saints before the weekend’s round.
Saints club president Dick Gleeson said the result cemented their spot on the ladder.
“That’s pretty good coming into the finals, because you’ll end up with a home final,” Gleeson said. “The boys played really well in front of a big crowd.”
Gleeson said best players on the day for the Inverell Saints were Lachlan McDonald, Luke Selig and Hamish Bird.
“Hamish was second in the League Medal last year and he’s going really well this year,” Gleeson said.
“It’s never an easy game against the Kangaroos and our boys did pretty well and played a good style of footy to win,” he said
“I’m pleased with the win, getting towards the business end of the year you want to be just about hitting your straps around now.”
Gleeson said this week’s game against Narrabri at Narrabri will be another hard one.
“They’re always pretty hard to beat over there,” he said.
“Their ground’s very small and it suits their style of play. That’ll be a good game.
“They’re very tall and they’re very big and they don’t mind the physical stuff.”
Gleeson felt confident the Saints could handle this weekend’s match and said there was also some good news in the fact that a couple of new players would be pulling on their boots.
“Mike Kenny from Bundarra played his first game on Saturday,” Gleeson said.
“He’s a big ruckman, which we probably lack.
“He played his first game of AFL ever, and he did very well, so he is only going to get better and better.”
Gleeson said the compe-tition was shaping up well for the Saints leading into the end of the season.
