The pair played for the Cyclones, the NSW Country under 17s team. Scoble captained the side and was also selected for the Australian side.
“There were six teams there, including us, in the under 17s. We played each team twice and after our 10 round games we had won nine games and lost one game to Queensland, so we qualified in the top two for the semi-finals,” Scoble said.
“We played Queensland for a spot in the grand final. They beat us in that game.”
The match held more than a defeat for the Cyclones, though. During the match Scoble dived for a catch and got his fingers caught up in the net and his wrist twisted when he hit the ground.
“It actually didn’t feel as if I’d done anything serious, so I got up and kept playing,” Scoble said.
After the game his wrist started to swell and Scoble could not move it. A fracture was subsequently diagnosed, but it had not stopped Scoble from bowling during that game.
“I had to sit out our preliminary final game against Western Australia, which was for the second spot in the grand final, and unfortunately we lost that game as well, so we were knocked out,” Scoble said.
Western Australia went on to play Queensland in the final which they won by a single run.
Scoble said his wrist will be in a cast for six weeks.
“I won’t miss any major tournaments, since it’s the end of the indoor season, and the oudoor hasn’t started yet, so I don’t miss anything overly important,” Scoble said.
“I was selected in the All Stars team (the Australian side), there’s no World Cup this year, so it’s just a merit team.”
A World Cup is due to be held at the Gold Coast next year, and Scoble said he will be eligible for the under 18s side for that event.
Both players said they had enjoyed the experience greatly, with the great competition and a great week.
“We had good coaches who really gave us a lot of tips and helped us out,” Scoble said.
