Fighter jets make a great impression
Two RAAF F/A 18 Hornet jet fighters flew into the Inverell airport on Tuesday and On the Pulse was out there pushing against the fence to get a glimpse of our country’s first line of defence units, along with a heap of other people.

It did cross On the Pulse’s mind that if something weighing about 10,000 kilos (unloaded) that can travel at 1.2 times the speed of sound at low altitude can touch down there, then a civilian air service aircraft would have little trouble landing and taking off.
Yes, you’re right, another issue entirely. Probably has more to do with cash than community.
And community was what these two jets were all about.
Two of Inverell’s sons returning home with their offices, and if they work in one of the best offices in the world then it’s all down to their own hard work and devotion to training.
No doubt though, Michael Newby and Damien Wilkins are living the life just about every red-blooded Australian (and probably American) male has aspired to since the release of the Top Gun movie.
How cool was it?
To see Michael Newby’s plane with FLGOFF Michael Newby “Newby” printed just forward of the cockpit, now that’s real Tom Cruise stuff.
And SQNLDR Darren Hughes “Huge” on Damien’s plane … wait a minute.
Hey, now how extra cool is that! Bet Damien’s gone to the boss and borrowed his fighter-bomber for the day to go home and see the olds.
Now that’s something Maverick would never have asked Viper!
It was all about the fighter jets on Tuesday
Yes, the fighter jets attracted a lot of interest in town on Tuesday, and not even a court appearance by our state MP Adam Marshall could distract local residents.
On the Times Facebook page the link to the story about the only pilots was shared 19 times and there were 15 comments.
When a link to the result of Mr Marshall’s court appearance was posted on the same day it received only one comment.
“What time do the jets take off do you know??” it asked.
Gwydir CWA set to go international on Monday
A huge event in the CWA calendar falls on Monday with the CWA Gwydir Group hosting their annual International Day at the Uniting Church Hall, Inverell. Scheduled guest speakers include Opera Northwest founder Peta Blyth and Botoka Motsumi.
Botoka will give a profile of his native Botswana and is bringing a dance troupe to perform.
Activities, including a fun fashion parade are planned throughout the day.
Gwydir group publicity officer invited women of all ages from around the area to come along and get a taste of the modern CWA.
The organisation has been very active lobbying government and raising funds for various charities. The day kicks off at about 9.30am.
“We’re so much more than tea and scones,” Iris said.
Indeed.
Who says we can’t park well? It seems we do...
On the Pulse is a feeling little self-conscious these days with the rising popularity of ‘Inverell’s Worst Parkers’ on Facebook. We seem to be taking just a bit more care, getting our wheels between, and parallel to, those pesky lines (were they always that angle?).
Looking around, it seems the outing our least impressive parkers has made an impression.
Though we get a good chuckle to see we’re not alone in our frustration with bad parking, it’s also been an exercise in self-examination.
Who says laughter isn’t the best medicine?
