The Highlander’s coach tipped his team to win by seven points against the Gunnedah Red Devils. He missed out on that result, but the Highlanders did trounce the Devils 19-5, to win by exactly double Bremner’s forecast.
“I was very pleased with the result and it was one the boys definitely deserved,” Bremner said.
“They played out of their skins and it was a great result.
“It was just an all-round a good game of footy.
“We scored 14 unans-wered points in the first half, and controlled them defensively and our defence was fantastic, it was what won us the game on the day.”
Bremner said everyone turned up and played well.
The Highlanders had been defeated twice by Gunnedah earlier this season, who were running fourth on the top tier ladder.
Narrabri Blue Boars lead the pack at the moment, followed by the Pirates, the Moree Bulls and then the Gunnedah Red Devils and then, 33 points behind the competition leaders, come the Highlanders.
Bremner has spoken about the possibility of the Highlanders lifting at the end of the season, but was reluctant to predict that the weekend’s game was the beginning of that come-back.
“Ideally yes it would be, but the probability’s not great,” he chuckled.
“In the culture we’re building at the club, where you’ve just got to grind away to get wins, you’ve got to be patient in attack and really step up in defence. It was a really big set-up for these young fellas.
“And it was a win they deserved, you know. They’ve been toiling away very hard at training and trying hard on the field and they were just due for a good win.”
Bremner said the win will certainly be a morale booster for the side.
Highlanders play Moree Bulls at Moree this coming weekend, and Bremner said Moree will be looking to bounce back following their loss to Narrabri.
“It’ll be another tough encounter,” he said.
