A gala morning is planned at Waratah Park with activities for children of all ages.
The day was launched in 1988 to recognise and protect the preciousness and strength of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
On August 4 each year, the event has a distinct theme, and in 2014, the focus is Kids in Culture-Strong, Proud and Resilient.
Behind the theme are the intentions to keep children fluent in their culture, and with that culture and community raise them to be strong and proud of their identity.
The initiative states: “By celebrating Children’s Day, every Australian can play a part in ensuring all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children are resilient to life’s challenges and thrive as future leaders of their communities.”
Around this theme, event organiser Walanbaa Gaayili Out of Home Care Service of Inverell has planned a number of culturally supportive, fun and creative activities for children.
There will be boomerang painting, clapstick decorating, storytelling and tie-dying as well as other table-top pursuits for little hands.
Armajun Dental Health service will be along to talk to children about keeping their teeth healthy.
Also on the schedule is hoopla, with many prizes ready for lucky winners, a jumping castle, face painting and a free barbecue.
Local talent Alex Munro will entertain the park with song and didgeridoo.
There will be free NATSICD t-shirts and childrens’ activity bags provided by the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC).
The NATSICD Day at Waratah Park is from 11am to 2pm on Monday.
