The field of contestants proved formidable, as many of her opponents were from Year 8 and 9.
After she delivered her prepared speech on cyber-bullying and trolling, Phoebe gave an impromptu speech, with just five minutes preparation time, on the topic ‘Bad habits die hard’ and her teacher Caroline Wilson said Phoebe took a different approach.
“Many of the contestants interpreted the topic in a rather narrow literal way, focusing on personal habits, but Phoebe won the adjudicators over with her broader exploration of society’s reliance upon fossil fuels,” Ms Wilson said.
Phoebe said the adjudicators congratulated her for delivering her speeches in a sincere manner which made her aware of just how important the right tone can be to the success of a speech.
“After all het countless lunchtime sessions and hard work honing her craft with Phoebe is to be congratulated for her achievement,” Ms Wilson said.
Phoebe now qualities to participate in the state quarter finals, which will be held at Parliament house in Sydney later in the year.
