Inverell clinical psychologist Jamie Marshall is launching the five-week group to complement individual sessions, and create an environment of empathy for young people. Jamie said the idea has been in mind for a while.
“For a couple of different reasons. First of all, all the research tells us that group therapy, especially for teens, is just as effective, if not more so than one-on-one therapy,” he said.
“So that in and of itself is reason to do it.”
He said the second reason was that Medicare allows ten individual sessions per year, but group therapy was also eligible for Medicare and a separate benefit.
“They’re actually allowed to have 10 one-on-one sessions, plus ten group sessions.”
Jamie said the group can combat the stigmas some teens can labour under when they are burdened with anxiety or depression.
“I think the main thing is just seeing that there are other people like them with similar issues. They’re not alone.”
Jamie said there will be flexibility in the level of participation within the sessions.
“I’m not going to make anyone talk who doesn’t want to. The only thing I’m going to make everyone do at the start of the program is to introduce themselves in some way,” he explained.
“So in that respect they can just come and listen.”
