He helps continue a local support network, and keeps an eye out for the families of those who have paid dearly in the line of duty.

Pinning the support for local widows and dependants to the willingness of the community to take up the cause, Gus said Australia has been a world leader in providing continued support for those on the frontlines since Legacy’s inception back in the early 1920’s.

“Legacy is generally dedicated to caring for the families of veterans who have died or become incapacitated either in service or consequentially,” he said.

“I think our widows are pretty well treated, in Australia they are treated better than in any other country through the generosity of people giving.”

Finding its feet in Australia in 1923, Legacy is quickly closing the gap on a century of service to Australian war widows, dependants and service-people who have returned from often the most harrowing of duties for the nation.

With Australian service-people involved in conflict almost consistently over the past century and too often sacrificing all in the line of duty, Gus said local families effected by war is a common occurrence across the region.

“I think probably there is quite a fair few in the community who are or have been Legacy dependants over the years,” he said.

With roots in the First World War, Legacy traces its inception to Hobart where a group of ex-servicemen recently returned from some of the world’s most infamous battlefields in France, Turkey and Palestine, believed there was too little support for the soldiers and their families who had given all in the name of country.

Almost a century down the road and Legacy is still going strong, currently gearing up for Legacy Week commencing on Sunday and run through to Saturday, September 6.

Already, the local club has found support from a number of Macintyre High School students who have come on board to help with Legacy Week preparations, organising and coordinating merchandise set to go on sale next week.
