ESTABLISHING a weekly Inverell Homework Club is a seed of an idea, but New England Mutual staff member Craig Horner said he hopes that seed will grow.

Craig said homework clubs are found across Australia and overseas.
The sessions offer kids with busy lives, families or just needing an extra boost some consistent support.
“I was at parent/teacher night and I was just listening to teachers talk about some kids not being able to hand their homework in and I thought, maybe we might be able to help,” he said.
Initial target years are kindy to year 6. Craig said they would like to start small, gauge the interest and get their bearings.
“If the interest is there for secondary, obviously we’ll look at that a little bit down the track and just see how this one goes,” he said.
The Inverell Library has offered a venue, and Craig said they considered an hour after school once a week.
Once tutors came on-board, they would finalise a time and day to suit everybody.
Library manager Sonya Lange was happy to offer the space for the club, and said intervention at a critical stage could make all the difference for a child who was falling behind or needed additional help.
“I think it’s a really great idea and I’d be really keen to try and work with the staff from New England Mutual to get something happening,” she said.
Craig extended an invitation to teachers or retired teachers or student teachers to consider helping with the club. He said all volunteers would complete a police check before they would be cleared to participate.
“It just might help the kids out,” he said.
