“It’s a round robin tournament for all the north-east children in different age groups,” said tournament director and foundation treasurer, Jean O’Brien. This year the age groups will include nine and under, 11 and under, 13 and under 15 and under and 17 and under players.
“We’ll have 180 players, plus coaches, plus parents all coming to the tennis. We have 21 courts in the centre, which is the only area in the north-east that has that number of courts and we’re fairly central as well,” O’Brien said. “All the top players try to play in the tournament. Inverell has three players in the 17s, and one in the 13s boys.”
Nine and under play with smaller, low-bounce orange balls on a court with drop-down lines to make the courts a lot smaller, and players do not go on to state competition.
Under 11s play on a normal court and use a green ball with a 75 per cent compression ration. The top six players will qualify for state.
In the 13s, 15s and 17s, the top eight qualifiers will be eligible to play in Penrith.
“It’ll be full-on from 8am on Saturday morning and hopefully we will have two or three that will go to state,” O’Brien said.
