The ride is a fundraising and awareness campaign for Down Syndrome NSW.
“They assist families, such as mine, throughout NSW who have a family member with Down Syndrome, mainly through support and information,” event organiser Brendon Campbell said.
Brendon said there are guidelines, even in the scrapheap ride. Break those guidelines and it will cost.
“You can either ride a real bike, like I’m cheating and doing, or you can ride a bike worth less than $1000, which is a real scrapheap bike. Mine’s worth a little bit more than that,” Brendon said.
Because Brendon’s bike is worth more than $1000 he had to pay $200 entry fee instead of the usual $100 paid by those entrants riding the ‘not so pretty’ models.
“It’s still worth it because the money is going to such a good cause,” he said.
“I think this is a fun way of raising awareness and a fun way of raising money so long as you stay upright.”
The ride is all off-road and will go from Inverell to Nymboida (near Grafton).
“The first day we will get to Tenterfield. It’ll take us a day to get there by the route we’ve taken,” Brendon said.
“We get to Nymboida on the Friday night.
Wherever people ride from at the beginning of their ride, they all meet there that night. We’re there on Friday night and Saturday night, and then everyone turns around and rides home on Sunday.
“In previous years Team Inverell has raised $5000-$6000 per year, which is not bad.
“This year we have focussed more on the awareness, but the money is still coming in.”
A travel voucher worth $1000 from Windsong Travel is being raffled to support the cause, and will be drawn tomorrow night.
Brendon said he did not have a total amount for the funds raised yet.
“People in our town are very generous,” he said.
