Since January, every two to four weeks Rotary Club members have volunteered time to sort through the boxes, bags and stacks donated by from across the area. The last piles were picked up and examined on Wednesday at Goddard’s Wool Store, and separated into categories and quality.
“Some months the place has been stacked,” said club member Peter Lloyd as he hunted to find the box designated for animal books. From fiction to bird books, science fiction, craft books, world atlases, and first editions and collectables, there is something for just about everybody.
“The kids’ books we sell a bag for a dollar. Our aim is to recycle the books, in other words, we don’t put on an exorbitant price, because we don’t want to have them again next year,” Peter said
The club uses funds raised each year for a dedicated cause.
“One year we had the Caravan of Hope, we paid for a caravan for the Salvation Army counsellors. Other years we paid for things for the hospital,” Peter said.
“This year we’re paying towards our youth activities. We’ve got up to 14 or 15 youth activities that we support.”
Programs include the overseas Youth Exchange, schools’ IT excursion to Sydney for Bundarra and Ashford schools, Science and Engineering Challenge and sponsorship of students to participate in humanitarian activities in East Timor among others.
Books can still be donated up to the first day of the sale at Goddard Wool Marketing or the Wade Street Store. Donors may also ring Gordon O’Brien on 6722 2773 or Peter Lloyd on 6721 2505.
