THE Northern NSW Junior Tennis Foundation’s Champion of Champions Tennis Tournament was held at the Inverell Tennis Club over the Weekend of September 13-14, and tournament director and foundation treasurer, Jean O’Brien, said it was a big success.

“We got through a lot of matches. There was 170 odd players who all played at least six sets each. We had kids come to the tournament from the Queensland border all the way down to Kendal and out to Lightning Ridge,” O’Brien said.
“A lot of these children play a lot of these tournaments. We had 10 round robins for them to qualify in for the North-West to get to this final stage.”
Eight boys and eight girls from the age groups except the under 9s qualified for the State finals to be held in Penrith at the end of October.
“Gabby O’Gorman and Emily Osmond are the two big favourites this year. They both played very well in France. They got a lot of experience over there when they played five tournaments in four weeks,” O’Brien said.
“They played at Monte Carlo where all the top players play and had a great experience there.”
Results for the Champion of Champions were: the Kevin Birchall team event was won by North-West, the Max Schaefer Sportsman Award was won by Miles Brown, and the Jean O’Brien Sportsgirl Award went to Kyra Carlyon.

The winners of the 15s Boys and Girls were invited to spend six weeks at the John Newcombe Tennis Camp held in Texas, USA.
17s and under Boys final, Andrew Lemin def Zac McCann 6/3. 17s and under Girls final, Gabby O’Gorman def Emily Osmond 6/3.
Inverell’s Angela George qualified for the state finals for the 17 and under Girls in October and Ben Butler is the first reserve for the 13 and under Boys. Jack Reed is the first reserve for the 17s and under Boys and Warwick Hodgkinson is the second reserve.
