The security threats are very real. So, too, is the danger of losing our way.
If we give in to fear, if we mistrust others because of their religion or manner of dress, we lose – and those who would perpetrate terror and hatred in our communities win.
Now, more than ever, we need to show that Australia is a country where people from every corner of the globe can live together in harmony.
In our churches, synagogues, mosques – wherever people of faith gather – we must choose to be peacemakers who stand in solidarity with everyone of goodwill irrespective of religious, cultural, or ethnic differences.
I know not everyone shares my faith, but I urge us all to pray for peace.
Our political and community leaders need our prayers, as do our men and women in uniform at home and abroad. So do the victims of violence and intolerance, and their families. And, perhaps most of all, so do our enemies.
