“The small business environment is still tough in regional centers, as there is more competition than ever before and consumers are still cautious”, he said.
An award winning creative writer and former business journalist, Damian is a regular media commentator on business and public affairs issues and a highly sought after conference speaker.
The Inverell market is changing at a faster pace each year – with local proprietors now competing with online competitors from around the world and the warning is to be careful of complacency.
“The worst thing to do is put your head in the sand,” Damian said.
“These are long term structural changes that require businesses to adapt.
“Business owners need to be taking action to make the most of their local advantage but the key is how to do that.
“Small business owners understand risk – the key is knowing which risks to take to stay on top of change and ahead of your competitors”, he says.
Damian first honed his creative and performance skills as resident poet for national media outlets including the ABC, Fox Sports, Triple M and the Alan Jones program, and his audio release (Published ABC Enterprises and sold in ABC Shops) was a finalist for an Australian Poetry Award in 2000.
His poetic tribute to the ANZAC's, 'Sir', is taught in schools and included in Anzac Day services across Australia.
His business acumen has developed through his subsequent career as a successful advertising and public relations executive, and as a business journalist with Fairfax Media.
His understanding of business and government, his knowledge of current affairs, and his rare creative talent make him one of the most entertaining, topical and insightful speakers in Australia today.
He is a graduate of the esteemed Sir Vincent Fairfax Ethics in Leadership Program, an advisory panel member to Green Cross Australia and he sits on the board CitySmart Pty Ltd, a Brisbane City Council company responsible for corporate engagement in the Lord Mayor's sustainability program.
Damian is coming to Inverell to run free business workshops on the topic: The Risk Dilemma – How great businesses know which risks to take.
