Coach Peter Burgess said many of the school records broken by students this year had stood for 20 or 30 years.
“We knew we had great potential for some good results (at zone and state), but we probably did even better than we hoped,” Burgess said.
“River Melia broke four school records and he dominated at the North West level before going on to win a gold medal at state athletics. Sarah Flick jumped extremely well through school, zone and North West and trained hard to earn silver at state.”
Bethany Zanco-Hinds was another student who broke both school and North West records and went on to finish sixth at state.
“At state athletics Macintyre students continued to excel with nine top 10 placings,” Burgess said.
“It’s possibly the best results as a squad in the school’s history. We were the most represented school in the whole region with 18 qualified.”
Burgess said the school is lucky to have the training facilities which have led to numerous personal bests from the athletes. Melia was one who pushed himself.
“I set my goal to get below 14 seconds in the 90 metres hurdles and achieved that with 13.51,” he said.
It was enough to win him his gold medal. A Silver medal was also part of the plan for Flick.
“I aimed for a podium finish as my goal and I trained hard at school and at home,” she said.
Burgess said the school was extremely proud of the whole squad and appreciated the support of parents and carers and their willingness to travel to provide their children with the chance to compete at the larger venues.
