“This year we held it just a bit earlier.
“We ran nine events and had over 1030 first round runs, and then (including our finals) we had about 1220 runs. It was excellent and we had a great turnout,” Neville said.
“Considering how dry it is, we were very fortunate to get cattle supplied, because it meant we had to get over 1200 head of cattle to run that event.
“Local graziers and farmers were just phenomenal in what they lent us. It was massive the way people got behind us.”
Neville said the weekend’s event had similar figures to the one run a few years ago for the McGrath Foundation.
“Codie Law and Robbie Bloch were the driving forces behind it, but it was very much a team effort by heaps of other people. I mean, you could never name everybody, you’d just go on and on,” Neville said.
She said because campdrafting is such a family sport there were competitors from as far away as Victoria, south west Queensland and Casino and the coastal areas as well as local riders.
“At the moment southern Queensland are holding some of the biggest campdrafts to be held and some of the people are travelling to those. The ultimate is the Warwick Gold Cup; so they use these as a bit of a hit out, sort of thing,’ Neville said.
This year there was more than $7000 worth of cash prizemoney up for grabs.
“Then there was a massive amount of goods people donated,” Neville said.
“We featured the ladies draft this year and that was won by the Victorian lady Jolene Maloney.”
Other winners were Andrew Winks from Dirranbandi, who won the Maiden event. Robbie Bloch won the open for open event while the open draft on Saturday morning was won by Rodney McKinnon from Narrabri.
The Junior draft was taken out by Brockie Adams from Oakwood, Geoffrey Beard from Bundarra won the novice and then the juvenile draft was won by Kate Moorehead from Ben Lomand.
