He was recaptured on Wednesday morning after a foot pursuit in Inverell after police visited a South Inverell home about 11.30am.
Officers allege they found Gardiner inside the home but he fled the scene through a back window.
Police chased Gardiner on foot for several hundred metres including over several fences before he was arrested.
He was issued with a court attendance notice for the charge of escaping lawful custody and will appear in court at a later date.
Officers said the South Inverell home was one of 'several targeted premises' on their hit list to find Gardiner - who had not been seen since last Thursday at Inverell Local Court.
"It was a combination of public information and good police work, we'd like to thank members of the public for their assistance," Inverell Sergeant Ross Chilcott said.

Police are continuing the hunt for local man Richard Gardiner, who escaped custody while being sentenced at Inverell Local Court last Thursday.
Police inspector Rowan O’Brien said investigations were continuing yesterday after it was reported Gardiner was known to have stayed at a number of residences in the local area.
Gardiner, who had been released on bail, appeared before court last week facing charges of breaking a bond warrant and resisting arrest.
Inspector O’Brien said Gardiner fled the court after the magistrate handed down a nine-month jail term, and although there were police officers and a sheriff present in the court, Gardiner managed to escape.
A courthouse official yesterday said Gardiner was able to evade police in court and escaped on foot.
Gardiner was last seen wearing a white Titans rugby league shirt.
He is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, 175cm tall with brown hair.
Police are appealing to community members to contact 000 immediately if they see Gardiner or to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with information that could lead to his whereabouts.
