The Inverell High School students were toting buckets and scrubbers to earn a few dollars for their costume levy for the 2014 Schools Spectacular this weekend in Sydney. They have also done work at the Aussie Hotel and a few odd jobs to make up the balance.
The troupe of 14 is heading down today to join about 3500 public school students for rehearsals Wednesday and Thursday to be ready for the Friday and Saturday performances. Twelve of the girls are in the combined dance groups, and two are in the state dance.
In the old ‘bob a job’ tradition, the girls weren’t shy about doing some hard work for the excitement ahead.
Year 7 student, Kyah Williams is making her first trip to Sydney, and her ‘Spec’ debut. She said she was pretty keen to get to the gala event.
“To have fun, and just to go out there and participate with a lot of people and enjoy yourself and dance.”
Lydia Whitton, year 10, has been to Schools Spectacular before and was excited to return. She sald she loves to dance and gets lost in the music.
Sally Noble is also in year 10 and shared the fever of getting down to Sydney.
“Just performing in front of so many people, it’s just such a great experience, and to do it thousands of other people will be great, too,” Sally said.
Teacher Cath Jeffery is accompanying the girls down and felt the Spectacular was a testament to the talents within the public school system, and the energy of the young people.
“The thing that amazes me all the time, is you get 3500 kids, you have no discipline issues,” Ms Jeffery said.
“What you have out the back is this carnival atmosphere. The kids will start dances, impromptu jam sessions, it’s really cool.”
