Dr Liu had patients in Ashford and Emmaville, and his suspension in July saw about 100 people attend a public meeting in the Emmaville Memorial Hall to voice their support for him. 

HNEH general manager Tablelands cluster Wendy Mulligan said an investigation was launched following a number of reports that related to Dr Liu’s work at Vegetable Creek MPS in Emmaville, but due to patient confidentiality she was unable to provide any more detail.

“We are nearing the completion of the process and it is expected to be finalised soon,” Ms Mulligan said.

“HNEH is not involved in the provision of GP services, including those provided by Dr Liu at Ashford. The Medical Council of NSW oversees GP registration and practice.”

However, Ms Mulligan said she understood that the Medical Council of NSW had placed restrictions on Dr Liu’s medical licence. That was confirmed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Dr Liu is now subject to supervision.

Ms Mulligan said while the investigation continued, a visiting doctor would provide GP services at Ashford.

“Dr Hussain from Texas has advised HNE Health that he will now hold GP clinics in Ashford on Wednesdays, in addition to his Saturday clinic," she said.

“All community health services provided at Ashford by Hunter New England Health are continuing as normal.”

Ms Mulligan said active recruitment for a replacement doctor would begin immediately in the event Dr Liu was no longer able to provide medical services.
