Civil and Environmental director, Brett McInnes, said the works were part of Council's normal renewal activities and about 1000 pavers would be replaced.
“A number of the pavers had subsided. The surface level had become uneven, posing a potential trip hazard,” Mr McInnes said.
“Numerous pavers had also reached the end of their useful life, and started to crumble.”
Mr McInnes said the existing path was constructed in the mid-1990s from pavers recycled at the time from the CBD area.
“Council will also retain removed pavers that are in suitable condition for use in other projects,” Mr McInnes said.
Mr McInnes said the work had nothing to do with the new finish line adopted by the Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic.
On a separate issue, Mr McInnes said the placement of a number of traffic counters in the CBD is part of council's rolling program of gathering road data across the Shire and had nothing to do with the CBD Renewal Plan.
“We have six traffic counters that we try to have in constant circulation around our road network, to provide valuable road asset management information,” Mr McInnes said.
“They just happen to be in town at the moment.”
