That time of the year has rolled around again. Everyone is anticipating the big slide down a chimney by a jolly big man dressed in red, carols in the street and the ‘ting, ting, ting-a-ling’ of the always popular, and much sought after, end of year On the Pulse awards.
This year has been a difficult one for On the Pulse award judges.
So much has happened, so many characters and so little time, however, the recipients are now decided, and On the Pulse would like to congratulate them all, so, without further ado.
Adam Marshall took out this year’s On the Pulse Speedy Gonzales Award.
Of course this is for how quickly he comes back with state government funding after meeting local groups.
It all helps drive our community and OTP is sure he has exceeded the limit of what those groups expected. Yep.
Moving along, the On the Pulse Fight Them On the Beaches award went to Larry Cameron for his constant and consistent appearances at council’s open forum sessions.
He made his opposition to the Town Centre Renewal Plan clear.
Speaking of Mr Cameron, Inverell’s Concerned Ratepayers Association - of which he is secretary - is the winner of the On the Pulse Best Use of Social Media Award.
The group’s Facebook page has attracted a lot of attention from all types, providing plenty of entertainment.
Finally, On the Pulse is proud to announce that the 2014 winner of the inaugural Gourmet Breakfast Award is our own Inverell Shire Council.
This prize, coveted by every Jamie Oliver wannabe may only happen once, so readers, sit tight.
In recognition for planting Maples (may not be sugar maples, but still…) Crab Apples (we hear they are delicious candied) and Pistachios (we think there on Vivian Street and they may be the right variety), they have the potential raw ingredients to make a morning feast that would make Delia Smith blush.
We don’t claim to be either arborists or epicureans so excuse our small dig, but it does sound tasty on paper.
Congratulations to the council and good eating everyone.
Where are the rest of the Christmas lights?
On the Pulse could not help but notice we have only half a Christmas tree in Campbell Park this year. The lights do not go up to the top. What happened to the lights and what happened to the Yuletide spirit of our civic leaders?
Mayor Paul Harmon said he wasn’t aware of it, he just turned them on, walked away and went home without looking back to even see what sort of a job he’d done.
On the Pulse can definitely tell the Inverell Shire Council that there are those in the town who are not impressed by the fact that the switch they used to turn the lights on with was bigger and more impressive than the lights themselves!
Cr Harmon seemed not to be too worried by it all though, said he’d take a look and that he had been through enough with Christmas trees this year.
He was referring to the proposed tree in the main street as part of the CBD renewal plan that few wanted, but that’s not to say they don’t want a bright, cheerful, welcoming sight to greet locals and those who come into town across the bridge to do their Christmas shopping.
